The "True Fans" of Diablo 3

It never ceases to amaze me. Blizzard has continually released awesome games; I don't believe they have released even a single game that has not been well received by the gaming public. And yet, somehow, when their latest games are announced (StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3!!!!!) the collective Borg force, known as the internet, gets up in arms about every single tiny little detail that is released about the games from day 1.

My latest experience is with listening to the self-proclaimed "true fans" of Diablo 3. It seems to me that no longer are Blizzard's games...well Blizzard's, because the internet seems to have claimed them as their own. I don't know how many times I've seen someone on the forums say "our game" or "my beloved game" when telling Blizzard how much something about the game sucks. Their attitude seems to run along the lines of "How dare you make a game the way you want it to...as if you own it!" (Which...they...do!). I'm not kidding here, people think this way. In the past Blizzard has made awesome games with minimal input from the fan community. What makes the fan community all of the sudden believe that without them Blizzard can't possible make a good game and that it is up to them to correct every mistake that Blizzard has so stupidly made? (In their oh so enlightened opinions...)

Blizzard has released one, single, solitary, 20 minute game play video for Diablo 3, meant to show off its graphics and some of its new features. While the normal fans of Diablo 3 go "COOOOOOOOOOL! That will be an awesome game!" the "true fans" are up in arms screaming "NOOOOOOOOOO! What have you done to OUR beloved game!!??". Normal fans see the potential in the game and recognize the video for what it is...a demo to get people excited. The true fans lament over the fact that the game isn't monochromatic and hard to see anymore and have even made a rather silly online petition (with worthless security, it's completely spammable). They want the look and feel of the old Diablos preserved (monochromatic, repetitive, generally a pain in the butt). They seem to believe that if you can see past your character's nose, then it's too bright.

Normal or real fans as I'll call them, recognize that the game will go through many changes before final release. Art will be altered slightly, textures will be updated, and the interface improved. "True Fans" write entire forum posts about how the entire game is going to be absolutely horrible because of some minute thing they picked out of one screenshot or one 5 second segment of the video. They seem to believe that that 20 minute video represented the ENTIRE game's content and that Blizzard has no idea what they are doing, and of course that they know exactly what Blizzard should do to fix the problem.

Oh, and of course there are the people who say "It looks like World of WarCraft!!" You won't believe how many people there are who think that because the new Diablo has color in it and a few textures have a cartoonish feel, that suddenly the game is like WoW!! Oh noes!!! Even if this were true, heaven forbid! It's not like WoW, in any way shape or form. The art style is simply Blizzard's style, not World of WarCraft! It's not even the same development/concept team for heaven's sake.

Basically, people need to get over themselves and just let Blizzard make their games (I could go on about what people say about StarCraft 2, but this post has gone on long enough). Post your thoughts if you want, give opinions, let Blizzard know what you think but PLEASE for the love of all that is good, quit trying to put your opinions across as fact. Just because you don't like what you see does not mean it sucks! It simply means that you don't like it. Anyways, Blizzard is far more likely to listen to constructive criticism than the ever present whiny, snarling, vindictive, arrogant, haughty, self-absorbed opinions put forth by the internet Borg.

I just want to say, great job Blizzard, keep up the good work and don't let the internet get you down.

I have but one thing to say....

The Lost Vikings is the best game ever...

Go Blizzard! (k, two things)

I loved that game! LOL

Yeah, people should stop QQing. I can honestly say that I didn't watch that 20 minute video. I got bored after the first minute =/ I did see the guy get seemingly overwhelmed by the mass of little dudes O.O Scary stuff.

I did think the interface looked a little WoWish, but I just thought they were made by the same company and that the interface worked... Besides, WoW is very popular, why should it matter if it imitates it a bit?

Finally, this is a new game, so it won't be the same.If they liked the old Diablos so much, why don't they just play those?

but.... but... behold the power of anonymity via the electronic medium! It has always amused me, but then, akin to my philosophy on music, I don't care who makes it, I take it bit for bit, song for song, game for game.

And with many other things, I much prefer the independent developers and producers... more focus on story, less on graphics.

Critics have always existed with the announcement of blizzard games. I remember seeing people being pissed off about the announcement of Starcraft and Diablo 2. The only critics I have seen with the announcment of all these games are forum trollers... in other words, there is no reason to make a blog about this... as those people have no credibility. Cheers.

I am a Diablo Fan.

I own Diablo 1, Hellfire, Diablo 2 and LOD. I have (At the time of writing this) maxed out every character in all the games (Highest Lvl - Killed Diablo (Baal in D2) on Hell Difficulty.... I still play Diablo 2 TO THIS DAY to try out different combination's of different classes!

While I admit that Diablo 3 DOES have some WoW-Like Qualities (Buff / De buff Potions, 1 Block Inventory Items, Etc), I trust that Blizzard will make an awesome, highly addictive game (Like EVERY other game they have EVER made) that will keep users entertained for years to come.

That's my opinion :)

Okay, so I have a blogger account, but my blog is very personal and I don't really like anyone seeing it but the few people I have allowed to. Just so you know.

Now on to the topic.

DIABLO III IS WAY TOO INFLUENCED BY WORLD OF WARCRAFT AND YOU'RE SUCH A DUMB BASTARD FOR NOT KNOWING IT AND U 5UX0RZ!

Just kidding. I actually like the way it looks. I do think that there could be some changes, but what you said is right. They'll tweak everything along the way. The game isn't out yet.

Besides, When I first saw the gameplay trailer, I didn't notice any "cartoony-ness". The only thought in my mind was "HOLY SHIT THIS GAME LOOKS LIKE IT WILL ROCK THE WORLD!" I don't understand how people can say that they won't buy the game just because of a demo they saw.

And what's wrong with the outdoors? I've heard that they look too "green" and "alive" (I guess). I love the way the outdoor environments look. What, are they supposed to be; something from Pitfall for the Atari? It looks good the way it is. They complain that it's not dark enough. I think it would be cool to see how the world looks in all its beauty, and then see it almost conquered by hell, turned into a dark wasteland. It would certainly inspire me to kick some demon ass.

The main problem I have is with the classes. Witchdoctor looks great, but only 5 classes? Come one. They have so many more options in WoW (I've only played it once). In Diablo 1 they had 3 classes, in D2 they had 5, and then 7 with the expansion pack. Then they go back to 5? I don't know. I just think I'll be missing the druid and paladin... They better release an expansion that adds at least 3 more classes though. Or I'll be mad. I'll still love the game, but I'll be mad.

I'm in total agreement with you, fella. (and jared, because The Lost Vikings was rad taters...period)
the vast majority of these "fans" are just upset it isn't what they've been dreaming it would be.
i'm glad it's not.
it looks better than i thought possible...and i can't wait to get sucked into yet another...Diablo Void.

Ok - Show me ONE (Any) Blizzard game that has NOT been a Smash Hit? :)

Mr. Anonymous, I'ma call you Josh. Josh, if you just call people names, people won't take you seriously, even if you have a good point. Also, include your name, or people just think you're a flamer and then really won't listen to you.

Besides, everything could be better. The old Diablos could have been better, WoW could be better, in fact, pretty much everything could be better. I'm sure we will all find flaws in the new Diablo, but that doesn't mean it won't be a spectacular game.

Unknown said...

Thanks for responding everyone, I appreciate the feedback. I suppose if I'm actually getting readers, I should try to post a bit more often.

To Mr. Anonymous, you have every right to disagree with me, but there is no need to start throwing around vulgarities.

To Reelix, yeah I admit that the style is "Blizzardy", meaning it's stylized, a bit over the top, and more colorful, and in this sense it is closer to WarCraft than D2 as far as art goes.

To Jaeryd, I think that the reason they are trying to stick to five classes is because they want little or no overlap between the feel of the different classes. The more classes, the harder this is to achieve. Plus, knowing Blizzard they're obviously saving some for an expansion.

Lukas, I agree. I can't wait for this to come out. Though...I will probably be waiting 2 years, so I don't really have a choice.

Wasn't Rock and Roll racing a Blizzard game as well?

This reminds me of foot ball "fans". "Why did they draft him? WE don't need him on OUR team, he sucks!". YOUR team? I was unaware you played foot ball professionally buddy. Did you have a chat with the coach about how to do his job? See, the people you're describing here are known as "fan boys" and the collective rest of humanity despises them.

Ok - Im the last person you'd expect to diss Diablo 3, but here I go.

The following has been officially announced:

1.) It's going to be alot lighter than previous Diablos.

Not all that bad though.

2.) It's going to use the WoW 1-Item-1-Block Inventory System.

Urmmm... Ok....

3.) It's not going to have LAN Play.

WTF...

4.) It's (Possibly) going to have Battle.NET Fees

WTF?!?!?!!?

5.) It's going to have approximately the same game-length as Diablo 2

Diablo 2 was short :(

6.) Health Orbs

Urmmm ;(

Ok... Great... Now, I can never play it multi-player...

56k Internet Connection... Battle.NET Fees... No LAN...

Well, that's just great...
